Boundaries of practice
What's not treated
Good practice means saying no when indicated:
- Diabetes, peripheral arterial disease, or neuropathy — do not self-treat with over-the-counter acids, which can cause serious harm; these conditions require podiatry assessment before any verruca therapy
- Pregnancy — some treatments are avoided or modified, so tell us if you are or may be pregnant
- Poor circulation or a history of delayed wound healing in the feet, which affects suitability for freezing, needling, and acids
- A weakened immune system, which can reduce response to treatment and raise infection risk
- Acute infection or broken, inflamed skin at the site — we treat the infection first before any verruca therapy
Patient journey
What to expect
Consultation & preparation
Come to your appointment with the area clean and dry; you do not need to file or treat the verruca beforehand. Bring a list of any medications and tell us if you have diabetes, circulatory problems, or a weakened immune system, as this affects which treatments are safe. Avoid applying acid plasters in the days before assessment so we can see the lesion clearly.
During treatment
Aftercare
You will leave with a written summary and self-care advice — keep the area clean, avoid sharing towels, and cover the verruca at pools and gyms to reduce spread. After Swift or cryotherapy you may feel tenderness for a day or two, which is normal. The verruca spreading slightly is not an emergency, but seek same-day medical care if you notice spreading redness, increasing pain, pus, or you feel feverish, as these can signal infection.

FAQ
Common
questions
Does Swift microwave therapy cure verrucae?
There is no guaranteed cure for verrucae with any treatment. Swift is a newer microwave therapy with promising but still-emerging evidence, reviewed by NICE in a medtech innovation briefing. It usually needs a course of sessions and works for some people but not all. We set realistic expectations before starting.
Will my verruca go away on its own?
Often, yes. The NHS notes that verrucae usually go away on their own, though it may take months or even years. Because the evidence for treatments is limited and none is reliably curative, watchful waiting is a reasonable choice unless the verruca is painful, spreading, or troubling you.
Does verruca treatment hurt?
It varies by method. Swift causes a brief sharp sensation during each pulse but needs no anaesthetic. Cryotherapy can sting and blister afterwards. Needling is done under local anaesthetic. We discuss comfort and aftercare for each option so you can choose what suits you before any treatment begins.
Can I treat a verruca myself with a chemist's acid plaster?
Many adults can use over-the-counter acid treatments, but they often irritate the skin and do not always work. If you have diabetes, peripheral arterial disease, or reduced sensation, do not self-treat with acids — they can cause serious harm. See one of our podiatrists instead for safe assessment and treatment.
How many Swift sessions will I need?
It depends on the verruca's size, depth, and how long it has been present. Swift is typically delivered as a course of sessions spaced a few weeks apart, with progress reviewed each time. Because response varies between people, we cannot promise a set number; we reassess and adjust at every visit.
