Foot Scan Assessment

Foot scan assessments in Canary Wharf, London using Footscan® pressure-plate technology: our HCPC-registered podiatrists measure pressure distribution, loading patterns and areas of increased stress while you stand, walk and move, then turn the data into footwear advice, rehabilitation strategies or custom orthotics where appropriate, across both London clinics.

A podiatrist reviewing digital foot pressure scan data at Canary Wharf Podiatry in London

The short answer

What this treatment is

A foot scan assessment is an advanced biomechanical evaluation of how your feet function during standing, walking and movement. Using Footscan® technology, our podiatrists measure pressure distribution, foot loading patterns and areas of increased stress, identifying biomechanical issues that may be contributing to pain, and turning that data into a tailored plan.
An initial podiatry assessment at Canary Wharf Podiatry

What does a podiatrist do at your first appointment?

Your initial consultation covers a full history and a thorough examination of the skin, nails, circulation and, where relevant, the way you walk. We explain what we find in plain English and agree a working diagnosis with you.

Where it is safe to do so, treatment starts the same day, and you leave understanding the plan and the options in front of you.

A foot scan assessment can help to:

Find the pressure behind unexplained foot pain

Forefoot pain, heel pain and recurring hard skin usually sit exactly where pressure concentrates. The scan shows those concentrations objectively, so treatment can target the cause: offloading, footwear or rehabilitation, rather than only the symptom.

Connect foot loading to knee, hip or back discomfort

How your feet load shapes everything above them. Asymmetric or inefficient loading can contribute to discomfort in the ankle, knee, hip and lower back. Measuring it gives your rehabilitation a clear, evidence-led starting point.

Make orthotics precise instead of generic

Where a correctable issue is present, scan data lets us design orthotics around how your foot actually loads, not a generic arch shape, including Phits 3D-printed insoles built from your dynamic data. Where orthotics would not help, the scan shows that too.

Optimise performance and movement efficiency

You do not need pain to benefit. Runners and active patients use scan data to understand their loading, improve efficiency and address small asymmetries before they become injuries, especially when increasing training volume or returning after a break.

Set an objective baseline you can measure progress against

Because the scan produces data rather than impressions, it gives you a baseline. Reviews can then show whether your loading pattern has actually changed with treatment, which keeps your plan honest and your progress visible.

Assessment

A full history and a thorough examination of the skin, nails, circulation and, where relevant, your gait. You leave with a working diagnosis you understand and a plan agreed with you, not handed to you.

Nail surgery under local anaesthetic at Canary Wharf Podiatry

Treatment

The care your foot problem actually needs, from painless skin and nail work to nail surgery under local anaesthetic, using sterile technique. Where a procedure carries real risk, we talk you through it and take consent first.

Advanced podiatry technology at Canary Wharf Podiatry

Advanced care

Where it helps, we draw on on-site MRI and X-ray, custom orthotics made in our own lab, and treatments such as laser and shockwave, so the right tool is matched to the right problem rather than a one-size-fits-all fix.

Ongoing foot-care maintenance at Canary Wharf Podiatry

Maintenance

We address the underlying cause, footwear, pressure or load, so the problem is less likely to return, and offer routine reviews and medical pedicures so your feet are looked after before there is a problem, not only once there is one.

"I wish I had known about you sooner." We hear it constantly. Feet are easy to ignore until they hurt, so we treat podiatry the way a dentist treats teeth: a regular check and a little maintenance keeps small problems from becoming big ones.

FAQs

What is a foot scan assessment?

It is an advanced biomechanical evaluation of how your feet function during standing, walking and movement. A Footscan® pressure plate measures pressure distribution, loading patterns and areas of increased stress across each foot. Your podiatrist interprets the data alongside a clinical examination and turns it into practical, personalised recommendations.

What can a foot scan show that looking at my feet cannot?

Pressure. A visual examination shows structure and skin, but not how load actually travels through your foot at each step. The scan reveals concentrations of pressure and stress, and differences between your two feet, that are invisible to the eye and often explain pain that otherwise seems to have no cause.

Is a foot scan painful, and is there any radiation?

No to both. You simply stand on the pressure plate and then walk across it a few times in normal comfortable clothing. Nothing touches your feet except the flat plate under them; there are no needles, no radiation and no recovery time. Most patients find seeing their own pressure map genuinely interesting.

Who should book a foot scan assessment?

Anyone with foot, ankle, knee, hip or lower-limb discomfort that may be linked to how their feet load, and active people who want to optimise performance, improve movement efficiency or reduce injury risk. It is also a useful objective baseline before custom orthotics or a return to higher training volumes.

What is the difference between a foot scan and gait analysis?

The foot scan measures pressure: how load distributes through each foot while you stand and walk. Gait analysis is the fuller movement assessment: posture, alignment, coordination and foot strike while walking or running, which includes scan data. If you are unsure which you need, book either and we will guide you.

Will I need orthotics after a foot scan?

Only if the scan and clinical examination show a correctable biomechanical issue that would genuinely benefit. Many patients need footwear changes or rehabilitation exercises rather than orthotics, and we say so plainly. Where orthotics are appropriate, the scan data helps us design them precisely, including Phits 3D-printed insoles.
